When you first acquire a tool the natural inclination may be to rush out to your work area and give it a rip. This is a good way to get into trouble, even seriously injured, if you aren't careful. Plan to spend a few evenings or weekends with the tool practicing. Sit down in your favorite chair and read the manufacturers' instructions before you even plug in the tool for the first time Look at the tool; learn each of its parts by name. With the tool electrically disconnected, place yourself in position next to the tool. Move the switch; adjust it in as many variations as you can think of. Make note of the safety features and any unsafe conditions. Locate any lubrication points. Familiarize yourself completely with this tool.
Clean up your shop or work area to make room for your new tool. Locate some scrap wood, metal, plastic, brick, or other materials you may be working with. Check that all the adjustments on the tool are secure. Plug it or pop in the rechargeable battery. Turn it on without touching any material. Get used to the feel of the power of the tool. Now turn it off and set it aside. Place some of the scrap material in your work area; apply power and practice using the tool to perform its basic functions. Try more difficult operations. Extend your knowledge of the tool's capabilities and limitations by varying adjustments and settings. Once these capabilities are mastered, add accessories to the basic tool. Practice with the accessories until you are thoroughly familiar with the complete operation of the tool. Now you've accomplished something. You are a master of the tool and know its overall capabilities. You are ready for an actual work piece.
