Air Power Tools Series - Recommended Air System

The supply of air must be free of contamination. The type of contamination that need to be eliminated are water (condensation produced by the temperature change while compressing the air), atmospheric dust, and rust scale. it is important to keep dust and debris from entering the air motor when the tool is disconnected from the air supply hose. Always keep the tool air inlet, hose ends, plugs, and couplers clear out of dust.
Filter - Regulator - Lubricator is mostly recommended. It is necessary to use FRL at each tool station. I also encourage the use of correctly sized accessories that will deliver a sufficient air supply. Besides, Lubricant oil through the air supply is very important. Supplying oil to rotary vane air motors reduces friction and wear of the moving parts and provide protection for steel components.
You may only need a single stage compressor for 0 to 80 PSI G (5.5 bars). But you will need a two stages compressor for 80 to 250 PSI G (17.2 bars) and it is recommended when tool use is continuous. Most air power tools require operating air pressure of 90 PSI G (6.2 bars).
Determine the total demand SCFM (LPM). List the requirements for all air power tools, equipment, and other air consumption variables (both continuous and intermittent air usage demands). Use the determined total demand SCFM (LPM) and add approximately 20% of system variables. If the total equals less than 100 SCFM (2,832 LPM) divide this total by 4 to find the compressor horse power. If the total is more than 100 SCFM (2,832 LPM) divide by 5 to find the proper compressor horse power.
As a general rule, the larger the tank, the better the system. Use a larger tank installation where large flows of short duration is needed. You may use a 60 Gallons (227 L), 80 Gallons (303 L), or 120 Gallons (454 L) storage tank for a 5 Hp Compressor.
