The Right Power Tool For the Job Can Make a Big Difference

If you've ever tried to work out which auto to buy, then you can fathom what some workers go through in selecting the proper power tool. Will it be the immense-heavy-duty version or the trim portable one? Would it be the electricity guzzling one or the more practical model? The search for the proper tool can be a bona fide inconvenience as you rummage through the shelves of your neighborhood hardware depot.
First of all, consider the quality of the variety of the power tool that you want to get. The warranty is one matter to view, as its length can be an index of the quality of the power tool. One more factor to consider is parts and accessories. Do accessories fit on other brands.? It is important to make sure that when you get, let's say, a disk sander that you will be able to find replacement disks.
It is also critical that you can get replacement parts and obtain customer service if necessary.. The motors of these tools move at terrific speed and tend to wear out, for that reason the availability of parts and customer service is crucial.
By now you should have an idea of the class of power tool you would want. The next thing would be how much power you require. The model you buy will depend on the power you need, so if you needed to do usual household odd jobs you won't need as much power as you would on a construction site.. Power and size usually have a direct relationship. If you're going to use the power tool in tight spaces you will need a smaller lighter model.
Cordless tools are very common in the workplace nowadays. Battery-powered tools can be a bit expensive when compared to AC tools because of the batteries that they use. Generally it is a given that the cordless power tools do not have the same power as corded tools. But the freedom of movement and ease of use that they deliver more than makes up for that on most jobs.
If you are buying tools to be used professionally you want to buy high-grade quality tools, which will last you for a very long time. Power tools are an investment if you are professional, so don't skimp on quality. You should always be looking at whether or not you will be needing any additional tools for any future projects. Being prepared in advance can be far less stressful on your finances than the sudden demand for a new tool you hadn't planned for.
So choose well, for there is no greater satisfaction, then having the right to for the job!
In trying to find the right power tools for any job it is vital to know the experiences others have had with the tools you are researching. What I am trying to do with these sites is help you find what experiences others are having. For example the Panasonic Cordless drill is gaining quite a bit of popularity with some professionals who not long ago would have wondered if it played tunes to work by. Stop by and make a comment.

Power Tools - Essential Equipment For the DIY Worker

With tightening budgets and needed repairs it is time to consider doing it yourself. However, having the right type of tools to complete the job is essential, whether you are fixing the door hinges or putting up crown molding to give some character to your living room.
There is always the possibility of renting equipment, but investing in a good, quality set of tools. No do-it-yourself worker is complete without a set of power tools. Remember, though, not all power tools are created equal. There are still different options to consider before purchasing a new set.
The first question to ask is whether you want corded or cordless tools? There are certain advantages an disadvantage to both of them. The first major advantage of cordless tools is the ability to go anywhere with them. You do not need to go hunting for a power source or worry that that outlet is just a little too far out of reach.
However, the big disadvantage to cordless equipment is electricity is limited. Hence, it means ultimate range limited power. There is nothing worse than cutting through a board or drilling a hole and having your equipment start dying. Additionally, if you do not have a spare battery, you're on mandatory break time until you recharge your battery.
Power is not the only worthwhile topic between the two types of equipment. Price also is a factor. As sweet as cordless drills are, they come with a price. With recent advancement, however, cordless products are becoming more reasonably priced.
If you do decide to go with a cordless tool, the next big question to ask is how much power do you really need. Getting halfway through a project and having to stop because you run out of juice will just make you frustrated. Thankfully, most cordless equipment come with a back-up battery.
Basic cordless tools can begin at 9.6V and go up to 36V. Common sizes are 12V, 14.4V, and 18 V. The difference in the battery voltage matters most about power, how much energy does that piece of equipment need to expend in order to complete the job. Are you drilling screws into sheetrock or are you using an impact drill on concrete?
In addition to voltage, there are a couple different types of batteries, which will make a difference on weight and battery life. There are typically three types of batteries that you can get for your power tools. The first, is the standard Nickle-Cadmium battery. This is the old faithful of rechargeable batteries. It will be less expensive, but it will die sooner and be much heavier than the other two types.
The second choice is the Nickle Metal-hydride, which is more expensive than its cousin, but it gives more life and is much lighter (which can impact strain on your arm as you work). Finally, there is the Lithium-Ion battery. This is the newest rechargeable battery on market and the best. So, the price reflects this. However, it is much lighter and last longer than both of the previous types.
Choosing the right power tool is important when it comes to build your equipment collection for those jobs around the house. Doing things yourself can be less expensive, but you may want to consider investing in a good quality set of power tools to make the jobs easier and more enjoyable.

Craftsman NEXTEC Cordless Tools: Real Power Tools or Just Toys?

In this article I am going to give you my quick review of all the NEXTEC tools available now. Craftsman just announced that they are greatly expanding the Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt Cordless power tools in May 2011 so this is a good time to go over the entire line. The Craftsman NEXTEC QuickBoost Charger will hit shelves in May 2011 and will be followed shortly by a NEXTEC 12-volt 3-in-1 garden tool, string trimmer, hedge trimmer, vacuum, digital inflater, work light and second generation "Hammerhead" Auto Hammer.
I like tools. I like "Tim the Toolman Taylor" Tools. Bigger is better! More Power! Oo-OoO! So when Craftsman sent me the NEXTEC Cordless 12 volt Power Tools last spring I used them, wrote a couple of articles on these cute little tools and then promptly put them down in my basement workshop. They were nice, lightweight tools. They had plenty of power, but I still went back to my "big" tools. I basically forgot about them.
Then, I went into my local Sears around Thanksgiving and I saw customers literally buying the NEXTEC Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver as fast as the store personnel could put them out. What was really strange to me is these NEXTEC 12 volt drills were flying off the shelves, but no one was buying the DeWalt DCD710 12V MAX lithium drill from the display right along side the NEXTEC's. I knew is was a nice little drill, but I didn't think everyone else liked it that much. The same thing was happening with the Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0 Volt Right Angle Impact Driver was selling well but no one was buying the Dewalt DCF815 12V MAX 1/4 impact driver right next to it.
During the winter I move into a room in the basement. It's small, only 10 X 10 ft so I don't have room for a lot of stuff. My router, a workbench with a wood vise, a few hand tools and a set-up table. There is no room for my table saw, miter saw, jointer and drill press. I end up cutting my wood out in the unheated garage, bringing it downstairs, fitting it up, going back out in the garage to drill the holes or joint an edge, back down stairs......you get the picture.
Well, while I was getting the room ready for the winter I found the NEXTEC tools and decided to take a good hard look at them again.
I decided that I would use these tools exclusively in my downstairs workshop this winter.
What I like:
Weight. The NEXTEC tools weigh only half of even my lightest cordless drill.
Size. Easy to handle even for small hands. Don't feel too small like the little cordless screwdrivers for big hands
Power. Have as much power as the old 15.6 tools and I think a lot more power than the old 7.2, 9.6, 10.8 and 14.4 tools. More power than the C3 19.2 volt Model 17191
In the rest of this article I will give quick review of each tool:
Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver Model 17586 What I like: It costs less than half of DeWalt DCD710 12V MAX Drill. It weighs less at only 2.2 lbs. with the 12.0 Volt Lithium-Ion battery. It will fit in your hand and easily slip into the pocket of your work apron. This is the most powerful drill on the market for the weight. It has 195 in.-lbs. of Torque which is plenty for most of the tasks around your home. It has a 2-Speed Gearbox and a 3/8-Inch Single Sleeve Keyless Chuck. A lot of guys thin they need a 1/2 inch chuck, but if you look at the wall at your nearest hardware store 95% of the drill bits and screwdriving bits will fit in this drill. 18 Position Adjustable Torque Clutch. Integrated LED Work Light. 30-Minute Quick Charger What I don't like: I really like this drill and about the only thing I would put on it would be a battery charge indicator. It would be nice to know when the battery is about to run out.
Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0 Volt Right Angle Impact Driver Model 17562 What I like: Even though Sears states this has only 700 in lbs of torque a bunch of us feel it has as much power as the Dewalt DCF815 12V MAX 1/4 impact driver for a lot less money. We also liked the right angle drive. It will get into places the other drills can't. What I don't like: The right angle takes a little practice to get used to. When you first use it...use both hands until you get the feel for the impact driver. After that you will enjoy using it.
Craftsman 17428 Nextec 12-volt Cordless Compact 1/4'' Impact Driver Model 17428 What I like: Same weight and feel as the Model 17586 Drill/Driver. What I don't like: Could use a battery meter.
12-volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool Model 17438 What I like: Multi-tools are quickly becoming the go-to tool for cutting, sanding, grout removal and scraping. This lightweight tool can easily do the work of a trim saw, jamb saw, drywall saw, detail sander, rotary grout tool, carbide cutter and paint scraper. The Craftsman NEXTEC is one of the lightest of the bunch and it will accept the Fein attachments. This gives it the most versatility of all the mulit-tools out there. It has plenty of power to do all these tasks around the home. The batteries last about 20 minutes during continuous use, charge in 30 minutes and you can get a second battery if you need one for less than $25. What I don't like: Eventually I would like to see quick release blade changing. It only takes 30 seconds to change the tool now, but I want to do it faster!
NEXTEC 12-volt Lithium-Ion Hammerhead Auto Hammer Model 11818 What I like: I don't use nails very often anymore. I use screws for most of my woodworking tasks, but the other day I put a few more lights in the basement and the Hammerhead was the right tools to nail the outlet boxes into the rafters. It only took 30 seconds to nail the box into the beam and NO BENT NAILS! What I don't like: Craftsman is coming out with a new version of this about May 2011. I will wait to give you my viewpoint then.
Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion True Finish™ Sander Model 61326 What I like: This is a "Mouse" size sander but it has two big advantages over all the other sanders like it on the market. One, it is cordless! The battery lasts a long, long time. Two, It doesn't make your hand go numb! The built in counter balancer cancels out the hand numbing vibration you are used to. What I don't like: NO ONE knows about this sander! It comes in one kit and you can get the "bare" tool online but very few people realize how nice this sander is.
Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion Circular Saw Model 61325 What I like: This is the one tool in the NEXTEC line that I really don't like. It has enough power to cut even hard maple, but the design is all wrong. The base plate "shoe" is too big for the saw, The saw mark on the shoe is too far away from the blade. It doesn't have a laser guide, the light is in the wrong place, the blades are too thick and there is not enough of a selection of blade styles. What I don't like: Oops, I already told you what I don't like.
Craftsman 14299 Nextec 12-volt Cordless Multi-Saw Model 14299 What I like: I use this saw a lot for the size, power, and versatility. It has a lot of power for the size and is really handy for those quick cuts. It uses standard jig saw blades which come in all sizes and styles. What I don't like: It doesn't have a "blower" to keep the sawdust away from your cut line.
Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt LED Worklight Model 14298 What I like: This is a great work light and flashlight for the house. It will run continuously for hours on one battery and the battery stays charged for over a year if you don't use it. The head swivels for under the sink work and it stands up all by itself. What I don't like: My wife saw it, and immediately stole it to put on her nightstand! Now if it only came in decorator colors!
Craftsman 12 Volt Nextec Compact Lithium-Ion battery Model 11221 What I like: You can buy additional batteries for less than $25. A lot of power for the size. (as much as your old 14.4 batteries) Will hold a charge for up to a year. With the new charger Craftsman just announced will recharge to 25% in less than 3 minutes. What I don't like: I would like a little clip so I can hang a spare on my belt.
Summary: The Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt Cordless power tools are great for homeowners. They are lightweight, strong and easy on the wallet to buy. They work surprisingly well for the size and cost a lot less than other brands. I highly recommend these tools.

Do a Personal Power Tools Review to See What You Need

If you're a homeowner, you know how important it is to do certain repair or remodel projects around your home yourself. Not only does that save you money, but assures that these jobs get done right. Having the right tools is part of that. Doing a personal power tools review of the important tools will make sure you have the right tool and that tool has the right features and accessories.
There are three essential power tools every homeowner must have. Of course, there are hundreds of power tools, and hundreds of iterations to those tools, but the three you must have are 1) a power drill, 2) a saber saw (commonly called a jigsaw) and 3) a circular saw. The drill allows you to drill holes and drive screws and the two saws will allow you to cut nearly any material in both curved and straight cuts, assuming you have the right bits and blades.
There are many features to every power tool, and these three are no exception. A well equipped power drill today comes out of the box with a keyless 3/8" chuck, infinite variable speeds, forward/reverse, one or more bubble levels, a clutch ring (for adjusting the torque), ergonomic grip, NiCad battery and powerful motors (choose 3.5 amp or higher). These features are for safety, accuracy and power. Remember; More power is always better than not enough power.
The sabersaw, called a scroll saw or jigsaw, is a power tool you'll use more than you know. If you don't have one now, start looking. With the right blade, you can cut through everything from plastic to thin metals to wood. These come with several very useful features and attachments, as well. Look for a sabersaw with a stable, cast base-plate that doesn't move when twisted using medium pressure. If its unstable, the blade may not stay vertically aligned and can wander off course! You'll want one with variable speeds, a lock-on trigger (eliminates finger fatigue), blade adjustment, a dust blower (keeps your pencil line clean), a 3+ amp motor and a tool-free blade replacement. A blade pop-out is nice, too.
The circular saw is the power eater of the bunch, with motors starting at around 12 amps and going way up from there. A cast or extruded base-plate is best here, too and feature rich models come with trigger guards (to prevent accidental starts) laser guides, variable speeds, depth and angle adjustments, spring loaded blade guards and dust chutes (for dust-free work). Even though these are indeed power eaters, they come in both corded and cordless models.
Again, get the most power you can afford. Constantly pushing your power tools to their maximum power range is a good way to wear them out! You should search online to get acquainted with what's available now-search "power tool", cordless drill", "sabersaw" or for information on specifics "cordless circular saw review", power tools review" or "name of manufacturer sabersaw review (i.e.. dewalt sabersaw review). The word "review" will bring back results with specs, descriptions and pros, cons and customer/user comments.
A power tool you may also consider, depending on your level of skill and specific use, is a power sander. Random orbital sanders leave no sanding marks, belt sanders are powerhouses and disk sanders come in both stationary units and attachments to your power drill. Table saws are fairly expensive, but if you're doing serious remodeling, could be almost a necessity. If you're cutting frames or molding in miter cuts you might look into a compound miter saw. These come in stationary and fold-up portable models, and could save you hundreds of hours if you're redoing your home's floor or crown molding.
The best thing you could do for yourself though, is to visit a big box and head to the tool area. Twenty minutes there will give you ideas you can't get anywhere else! And, speaking of the big boxes, they report a customer base today that's 40% women! Naturally, many power tools are now made with that in mind. Smaller, ergonomically different, powerful models sporting new colors and aesthetics. Are Power Tools For Women Really Any Different?

Actually, the phrase "power tools for women" is itself new. I remember going into a Home Depot a few years ago and seeing screwdrivers in designer colored handles and thinking "who'd show up on the job site with one of those?" That was the beginning. Up until recently women had to use hand tools with grips made for a linebacker and large, heavy power tools because that's all there was. As the great blues singer James Brown sang, "its a man's world."
Well, the big box retailers are changing, because their customer base is changing. Women will soon account for half of the shoppers at the home improvement stores, lumber yards and hardware stores! And, they're not shopping for man tools. Power tools for women is becoming a huge new industry, with new sizes, new ergonomics and new designs! Come to think of it, the whole DIY world is changing.
Nine out of ten female homeowners claim to be do-it-yourselfers, and single females are the second largest homeowner's group in America. This means they have a lot of power, in marketing terms. The tool manufacturers are very aware of all these stats and are contracting design groups, focus groups and tool makers in an effort to satisfy this new market. So, what could be different?
Cordless drills have undergone some amazing transformations lately. Lighter weight and ergonomics more in tune with the size and shape of the female hand with softer, more comfortable grips. Motors are being redesigned to produce more power and take up less room. And, colors... well, that's changing as well. You can now buy a whole line of hand and power tools for women in a wide range of designer colors, including pink!
Many women have a problem with tools colored pink, but they are among the hottest selling items online. Along with the new colors, there are tools made in floral printed handles, art prints and other design options. This in no way diminishes the power or toughness of the tools, though. In other words, tools-like everything else today-must be functional and fashionable at the same time! Like your cell phone, the new power tools for women take style into account.
Melissa Birdsong, a Lowe's executive, said recently "Traditionally, women have been involved in home decorating projects like paint and wallpaper. But we're seeing an increase in an interest in doing flooring, tiling, and even doing decks." These things require power tools. And, the more women use power tools designed specifically for them, the bolder they become! "As they become more empowered," said Anne-Marie Campbell, Home Depot executive, "they're able to come into Home Depot and say, 'Hey, I can do this myself.'"
Like women today, power tools for women are strong, powerful and stylish. And its only just begun! If you want to see what's out there, search "power tools women" or "women tools" to start. If you type "review" after (ex: power drill women review) you'll see descriptions, details and user comments.
